Professional preboarding: how to inspire new employees before their first day at work

In today's job market, which is characterized by a shortage of skilled workers and rising expectations, the phase between signing the contract and the first day of work - known as “preboarding” - is becoming increasingly crucial. Long notice periods in particular pose risks that can be drastically reduced through preboarding. Regardless of this, structured onboarding remains fundamental: according to the Softgarden study from 2022, 18% of all new employees resign within the first 100 days because onboarding was poor.

The onboarding study by Haufe from 2023 shows that 36% of the companies surveyed recorded terminations between signing the contract and starting work. Some companies have therefore already implemented preboarding measures, but early turnover remains a problem - especially in SMEs.

 

Effective preboarding measures:

The main focus should be on preparing your new employee and getting them excited about their new role. Well-dosed contact points are the means of choice.

Effective preboarding strategies strengthen the emotional bond between new employees and the company at a very early stage. Here just a few examples

  • Answering questions before they are asked (FAQs, checklists, etc.)
  • Personalized welcome emails or personalized intro videos
  • Welcome gifts
  • Invitation to company events (after-work, summer party, team events, etc.)
  • Introduction of a “pre-boarding buddy” as a mentor / internal reference person

These measures arouse enthusiasm for the new working environment and prevent poaching attempts from taking root. And: it creates security with regard to the decision made - an enormous value in times of uncertainty!

Therefore, professional preboarding promotes employee loyalty, increases identification with the corporate culture and reduces early fluctuation. Hence, strong preboarding can save considerable costs and sustainably increase the motivation of new employees.
